It takes a bit to develop the experience and qualify unfortunately. I think you have my e-mail, right? I hope you can arrange things.

Will definitely ask for some advice on the FC once it gets closer. It has been my dream for a couple of years now, but before my dream will come true, I will have to secure a real sponsorship, changing Rand to Dollars ain't so nice.

If you can run you can cycle, but not the other way round, but you will have to find a way to get your ass- robustness.

Good luck, will keep an eye out for you two !!!

Contact me if you need any help Marnitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704268753006398461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-8438993923685470112014-07-25T01:51:42.654-06:002014-07-25T01:51:42.654-06:00Co2 is the only way, just make sure the beat is cl...Co2 is the only way, just make sure the beat is clean and near enough to the side of the rim, pour a bit of water on the bead before you blast it with Co2. The water helps the bead to slide into place and also prevent to much air from escaping.

I use Mavic EX 823 downhill rims and Maxxis Ignator tires, because I'm always on the heavy side I need bomb proof rims and tires to keep my focus on the race and not to worry to much about picking fine lines. It's definitely worth trying this before you go with the specific rim and tire (we were able to seat the above mentioned tires with just a floor pump, Liehann had the same ones, they're definitely on the heavy/burly side). Lubing the bead before attempting this probably is useful.

I would just not remove the tire unless it's absolutely needed. If you bring a spare, it's probably worth having had mounted it once before, so the bead is a little pre-stretched.Beathttp://www.beultra.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-40617749941239696582014-07-24T13:49:37.360-06:002014-07-24T13:49:37.360-06:00I also wanted to ask about the tubeless setup. For me CO2 works for the burst of pressure but needs to be refilled with air later. Do you know a rim-tire-pump combo that would assure successful tubeless repairs or refills with sealant?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03059137901941493531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-37991382886663896622014-07-24T10:25:23.934-06:002014-07-24T10:25:23.934-06:00Forgot to list the pedals: Straitline Defacto. Utterly indestructible.

Btw the original thought of the bike was to go with readily available (in relative terms) components, aka Shimano (btw no complaints in any case on the XT stuff - it just works really well. The brakes in particular are my first choice no matter what, except for cold due to mineral oil), QR cs 15mm thru, etc etc. Turns out for the FC at least that's not really relevant - you can get replacement parts either from other racers (in Rhodes) or sent from bike shops, and it turns out SA you get maybe even more state of the art stuff for MTBs than in many shops here (presumably due to the fact that you are, indeed, allowed to actually ride your bike legally over there). Liehann had problems getting a straight steerer fork, whereas the tapered ones for example are more readily available.
Ultimately though the repair opportunities seem to be so sparse you better have stuff that works reliably.

Marnitz: I'm signed up for the FC, as is Liehann. (btw I hear you're interested in the ITI, you would have a ton of fun doing that.) As for training, I'll try to do as much long-distance biking and upper body work as I can muster. I won't be as fast as you, and I don't think I can get two 8 hour weekend days in every weekend ... It'll still probably be more running than biking :) I also have about 1500 more miles of running races planned before then ...
My bigger concern is actually my bad back, core strength and ass-robustness. Really time in the saddle is the way to go, I know, we'll see. Btw Jan, yes please send us the info I'm very interested.

As for chopping wood ... not in the bay area :) We really have to move to Alaska.
Beathttp://www.beultra.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-5530303960141953312014-07-24T08:16:38.288-06:002014-07-24T08:16:38.288-06:00Jill, I have a great set of exercises for neck, sh...Jill, I have a great set of exercises for neck, shoulder and arm endurance strength, prepared by my PT. All you need are various resistance rubber bands, few small dumb bells and an exercise ball. Would be happy to share. Two to three times a week for 45 min, huge difference. You might have the very best kit, the best bike and the best engine, but if you don't know how to read a map it's all worthless......

When you are a accomplished map reader you may start with your training program.
My training program work as follow, you start with little and work your way up to max. The Freedom Challenge is about endurance, you will never sprint anywhere believe me. While riding your bike you do it with full kit to get use to the weight and the handling of your loaded bike.
Monday rest
Thuesday 2 hours bike + 1.5 hours run
Wednesday 2 hours bike
Thursday 2 hours bike + 1.5 hours run
Friday 2 Hours bike
Saturday 5 - 7 hours bike
Sunday 8 - 12 hours bike
It's all about time, not distance and about endurance training, start with what you're capable and work you way to your maximum.

I would also from time to time chop a pile of wood for upper body strength, which you will need when portaging and swinging your bike over endless gates and fences
Get the best light weight kit you can afford.

Carry as much as possible on your bike and save your ass.....

Buy the best light system available.

Pack your humor you will definitely need it.......
Marnitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05704268753006398461noreply@blogger.com
