Sometimes it just does not work out but you've given everything and that counts the most.

I'll be running TRT100 for the first time this year (2012) and your race report really helped me to visualize the course. Thank you.

I also respectfully disagree about having to run high weekly training mileages in order to be successful in 100 milers. I run about 10 to 15 miles a week and completed 15 100 milers in the last 6 years.

Jakob Herrmann
http://www.ultrafanatics.com/profiles.asp?iMID=1SwissRunnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15660361233124019927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-20378329634790047202011-07-22T16:20:17.404-06:002011-07-22T16:20:17.404-06:00"One of the aspects I cherish about hard endu..."One of the aspects I cherish about hard endurance efforts is the way they strip me down to the simplest version of myself, exposing strong emotions and vibrant memories that normally linger too far below the noisy surface of my life. I was filled with a strong sort of love for this place, these mountains, and wanted to do anything for it, to express my love through the steps I took, pain be damned."

That sums it all up for me, Jill. Perfectly.

I'm sorry you missed the cut-off, but it sounds like you really appreciated your time out there, and that's possibly more important. I do feel disappointed that a volunteer would tell you during the race that your training was inadequate (totally unhelpful!!) but I also think more running during your training will really help your "hurty foot." There's really no substitute for training. That being said, 80 miles is badass, girl!

This was beautifully written, Jill. I was right there with you and totally felt your pain at missing the cut off. I really hope you come back to Tahoe. This is my favorite race, even though it's such an ass-kicker. I also find I am a terribly slow descender - not sure of myself on hikes and trail runs, but a great descender on my bike! I also get this hurty foot thing after 6-7 hours on foot. I have very high arches, and my feet are quite small for my height. I have size 8 feet and am 5'10". Anyway, wondering if there is something physiological to the hurty foot and also not feeling sure-footed.

-Sarahchatterboxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03863147093732489120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-72441928479788454582011-07-21T20:21:22.713-06:002011-07-21T20:21:22.713-06:00Thank you for sharing this great story. Whilst seeing one for an unrelated (non-running) injury a couple of years ago, she spotted that I over-pronate quite badly, (and proceeded to show me with black marker pen lines all over my feet, ankles and shins how wonky I stand), but then suggested some custom insoles for my trainers and walking boots. They not only straighten my stance out, which I swear to God has taken away other muscle pain, but they fully support my silly high arches, and because they're in full contact with my feet all the time and I don't slide in my shoes, I'm now far, far less prone to blisters when I'm traing - might be worth looking into? They heat-mold them like ski-boot liners, and then you can just transfer them from shoes to boots, etc.

Anyway - I look forward to the race report for the 100 you do finish. And beautiful photos, by the way! It seemed so sad to me that you had to time out that late in the race with sore feet, and how conflicted you felt about it afterward. Now I really understand. I'm so excited you're coming to visit at the end of the month!

And thanks, Amy. I would agree that stiff body mechanics are probably the underlying reason for most of my running issues, including the sore feet and the side-stiches.
