Leslie is most definitely still rocking the adventures. She's just finishing up with Colorado now, more than halfway done with the CDT.Jill Homerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02983065990450931943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-43674080720137906892017-07-28T18:34:14.269-06:002017-07-28T18:34:14.269-06:00Reading this was a blast from the past - I loved r...Reading this was a blast from the past - I loved reading Leslie's blog and can't remember if I found your's through her's or vice versa. Anyway, after I read your post, I scampered off into the interwebz to see if Leslie had rekindled her blog. Sadly not, but glad to still see she's rocking the adventures! You are both inspiring to me!!VikingGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14746450165840287543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-78422236389363833702017-07-18T14:31:38.209-06:002017-07-18T14:31:38.209-06:00I'm glad you got a taste of thru-hiking the CD...I'm glad you got a taste of thru-hiking the CDT. I keep thinking that a thru-hike should be your next adventure, even with (or because of) your health issues. The thru-hikers motto of "hike your own hike" may be a better fit than a more rigidly-defined race.

Btw, some thru-hikers do choose their own trail names, and many tweak the names considerably even after accepting one, or wear one and than get another that fits better. Hyoh, again--thru-hikers are kind of irreverent, even with their own traditions. I suspect you might want to experiment with the altered identity and perspective that a thru-hike brings though. The trail name is just a fun little signifier of all that.

Nice write-up, makes me lonesome for the millionth time for the long trail. Never stop missing it.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-75547665764483940212017-07-18T10:31:53.297-06:002017-07-18T10:31:53.297-06:00Spectacular journal of your part of the hike. During my 2015 thru-hike we did the burly alternate in this sretch that takes you over 5 13ers, and then last year I hiked it again with some friends who were thru-hiking! I made a lil video of that alternate on instagram- https://www.instagram.com/p/BKbBDtZjx5P/

I think you would freakin love a thru-hike. And the colorado trail is incredible. Reading your observations of thru-hiking and thru-hikers makes me so happy!! (Also FWIW, the great divide basin was one of my favorite parts of the CDT, and there was plenty of water in the form of cattle troughs :) )Carrothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00660738768087769417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18615538.post-57542896834157720362017-07-12T15:29:40.598-06:002017-07-12T15:29:40.598-06:00Back in 2001 I decided I wanted to walk the Appala...Back in 2001 I decided I wanted to walk the Appalachian Trail, so in a way it's been on my mind ever since. I discovered bike touring next, which is what set me on my current path. I've read a lot of thru-hiking memoirs, mostly from the AT and PCT (haven't found a terribly interesting one about the CDT yet.)

There may be a thru-hike in my future. A shorter one like the Colorado Trail is more likely than a months-long one like the CDT. I do love walking but that's really a lot of walking. Bike touring offers more variation in motion, and it generally allows one to move more quickly through the bad parts. I'm lightly disturbed by the notion of spending a week hauling water across the Great Divide Basin.

It sure is an accomplishment, though, finishing something like the CDT. It makes the Tour Divide look like a sprint in comparison. And I used to bring a stove too until I realized it was hard to find the time to cook. The storms look too sketch for me though.
