MRI results

So what I actually have is chomdromalacia patella. ("Runners Knee," as opposed to "Jumper's Knee.") Softening and swelling of cartilage between the knee cap and femur. I also have a fairly large Baker cyst as a result of fluid buildup. This is good news, actually, on all sides. It nearly always is recoverable without surgery. Should be better by now than it is, but I have not been known to rest well. I have been told to REST WELL, but overuse only prolongs recovery; it does not usually do further damage.

I am headed out to Anchorage for a work conference and it may be a few days before I post again. I just wanted to leave on a happy note with another picture of sunshine in Juneau, because it may not look like this again for weeks. Have a great weekend all, and Ride Well.

  2. Hi Jill,
I had chondromalacia (there is a much simpler, cheaper diagnostic),
and I don't have any problem now. I did three things you might not like:
I did leg strengthening exercises with my leg nearly straight (with a leg
extension machine); I started up riding again pretty gradually; and I
paid close attention to any pain and discomfort in my knee.

  3. Jill,

So glad to hear it wasn't something major. I've been following your saga for a while. Hope you get back out there soon.

  7. Glad to hear it, Jill. They always wait forever before finally doing an MRI, but once they do, things move along a lot faster. Take it easy, do some swimming. You're young; you can get back in shape in three weeks, easily.

  10. Jill,

    Fantastic news.

Now you can see a path forward that you will enjoy taking.

Your writing is so intense that I can actually feel your pain.

I can not imagine what it would be like to be unable to ride every day.

  15. I learned what "runner's knee" was - only after I ran on it so long that I could no longer walk. And every time I thought I was better and tried to go for a run.... Well, I think you know!

    Beautiful pictures on your blog!

  21. i totally just stumbled upon your blog randomly, and i just wanted to say that i love the town of juneau! i visited there, skagway and ketchikan on a cruise last september. i had an amazing lunch at a restaurant there, at a really nice place! i just cant remember what it is called for the life of me... anyways, i completely enjoyed my expirience in juneau, and the rest of my alaskan visit. also, i know of something that may help your knee. i know of people who have had forms of cancer and other uncurable diseases, and after taking these supplements the signs have decreased dramatically, even dissappeared completely. they are all natural substances, absolutely no chemicals or anything. they simply provide our bodies with the nutrients that we lack from our daily diets...they are amazing!! if you'd be interested in learning more about them, you can contact me at conversepiratecai@hotmail.com now take care of your knee and get back to that cycling!

  32. It been many years since I spent a little time in Alaska--Fairbanks area. It was a beautiful place but I missed my fast-food. I also couldn't get quite comfortable with those bears in the trash dumpster. Great site; great photos. Challenge the minds of your young folks at YouthPlay.
